Help with my Macbook Pro?

I have been using my year-old Macbook Pro a lot today. The screen was not responding, so I turned it off and let it cool down for a while. When I tried to turn it back on I heard whirring and the fans, but no startup chime and the screen stayed blank. The battery is fully charged and the ac adapter is fine. Any ideas on what it might be?
